Spanish Students Apply Skills on La Jefa Radio
Altamont’s Spanish 6 students visited La Jefa Alabama 98.3 FM, Birmingham’s award-winning Mexican Regional radio
station. The students— Leilany Brend, Sid Doppalapudi, Pranav Goli, Sam Linde, Caroline Prince, Wesley Sudarshan, Vinay Yerramsetti and Iman Zuberi—used the station’s technology to record and edit commercials and TikTok videos, and were interviewed on the air, all in Spanish.

Altamont Spanish teacher Nadia Barajas said the visit complemented what the students have learned about literature, cinema and art this semester. “It has been an awesome immersion experience,” Barajas said. “The students had the chance of applying their knowledge of Spanish in the real world, with native Spanish speakers from Mexico, Colombia, and El Salvador, with accents different from their Spanish teachers at school, and they also learned how a radio station and live broadcasting work. It was incredible to see how they were getting more and more confident when they saw how capable they are of communicating in their second language!”

After their work at the station, the group visited the Mi Pueblo supermarket for shopping and an authentic Mexican meal.
