Welcome New Faculty!
Laine Williams

We are excited to welcome the following new faculty members to the Altamont community!

Joni Wiley is our new geography teacher. She has a bachelor's degree in social work from Washburn University and a M.A. from Bowling Green State University. Prior to this position, she was the director of trainings for the Alabama Network of Family Resource Centers and co-director of Anytown Teen Leadership Summit. She has also worked at the Birmingham Holocaust Education Center and the YMCA of Central Alabama.

What excites you most about coming to Altamont?

I am thrilled to be part of the fantastic Altamont community! Altamont does a great job at being a tight-knit and supportive community that actively engages with Birmingham and surrounding areas. I am passionate about holistic learning and student leadership, so I am ecstatic that this is a significant focus for Altamont.

What are your hobbies?

I love traveling and taking mini-adventures. I'm a very creative person and find it relaxing to indulge in various crafting activities, including graphic design or DIY projects. I'm a foodie and love discovering new foods and cuisines, whether cooking or trying a new restaurant.

What is a fun fact about you?

I traveled the world for a year and went to 11 countries!

Yan Tong is our new Mandarin teacher. She has a B.A. in English education from Fuyang Teacher College in China and a M.A. in bilingual education from Wayne State University. Most recently, she has worked as a Chinese teacher at the Yuren Chinese School at Birmingham and Vestavia Hills Elementary East.

What excites you most about coming to Altamont?

I am very honored to be exposed to an environment where students' respect, integrity, balance, curiosity and leadership are valued. By teaching a foreign language, I hope for my students to gain a better understanding of the world and a respect for other cultures. I also hope to foster their natural curiosity by showing them foreign country's food, holiday and tourist attractions.

What are your hobbies?

I like reading, watching TV and traveling with my family.

What is a fun fact about you?

I want to take a trip to Egypt so I can visit pyramids.

Heather Kaiser is our new Spanish teacher. She has a B.A. in Spanish from Old Dominion University, a M.A. in Latin American and Caribbean Studies from Florida International University and a Ph.D. in Spanish from the University of Florida. She is currently pursuing a M.A. in education from UAB. She has taught at Samford University, University of Florida and King University.

What excites you most about coming to Altamont?

I am excited to cultivate new relationships with the students and families of Altamont. I look forward to helping students make cultural and linguistic connections with Spanish that not only expand their worldview, but also complement what they are learning in other classes.

What are your hobbies?

Tennis, travel and time with family and friends.

What is a fun fact about you?

I will talk to anyone and I love to make people laugh.

Maggie Hill is our new biology teacher. She has a B.S. in biology from the University of Alabama. She has taught science at the Jerusalem School of Bethlehem in Palestine. She has also worked at Valent Group, a risk consulting firm in Birmingham.

What excites you most about coming to Altamont?

I am super excited to work with students again. Developing relationships with students and supporting their goals is one of my favorite things about teaching, and Altamont seems to be the perfect place for that.

What are your hobbies?

I am an avid reader, particularly fantasy and science fiction, though I've had less time to read since my little girl was born (she has her first birthday this summer). I love to travel, play games (board, card, video, etc), and bake. I have also recently started my hand at gardening.

What is a fun fact about you?

I've been to 14 countries and territories outside of the U.S. and studied 3 languages besides English.

Beth Dille is the new director of The C. Kyser Miree Ethical Leadership Center. She has a bachelor's degree in history from the University of Wisconsin and a master's degree in education from Liberty University. She is also working on another master's degree in organizational leadership. Most recently, she was the director of the Environmental Center at Camp McDowell.

What excites you most about coming to Altamont?

I am most excited about working with a community of people that I have admired for years. I have been able to work with many of the students and teachers over the last four years at Camp McDowell and I have always thought that Altamont is a special place.

What are your hobbies?

I love to do anything that my son, Lucas, loves to do. We spend most of our free time hiking, playing basketball and baseball, swimming and anything fun outside. I also love to run and am currently training for a marathon. I also love podcasts, reading and traveling whenever I can. The beach is my favorite place to be.

What is a fun fact about you?

One of my favorite things is to travel to Thailand to work with people in Pattaya in the summers. I haven't been able to go in a couple years but I'm excited to go back next summer.
