Varsity Cross Country Season Ends in Dramatic Fashion at State Meet
Julie Beckwith

The Varsity Cross Country AHSAA State 1A-2A Championship Meet, held at Oakville Indian Mounds State Park in Danville Nov. 9, 2019, ended in dramatic fashion for the Altamont girls team. The girls finished the race in a historic three-way tie for first place, but AHSAA tie-break rules ultimately pushed Altamont to a third-place finish in the final standings with Whitesburg Christian in first and Cold Springs in second. The girls hard work and effort in this race capped off an outstanding season. Margarette Berdy (4th) and Merritt Edwards (15th) finished the race with All-State honors. Rounding out the team's top five finishers were Arden Campbell, Ariel Dean and Caroline Lee.

Altamont's boys team took fourth place at State, with the top six runners setting personal records along the way. The boys team had an excellent season improving by more than 50 points from pre-race rankings to the State meet. Top five finishers at State were Jesse Hungerpiller, Jack Nichols, Gage Bell, Shawn Goyal, and Francisco Carnaggio.

Altamont's boys and girls teams qualified for the State meet with second place finishes at the sectional meet, held at Sokol Park in Tuscaloosa Oct. 31.
