Izzy Coleman and David Zell took first place at the Deep South District Speech and Debate Tournament held at Montgomery Academy, March 3-4. Coleman and Zell were the only team out of 50 who went undefeated. They qualified for the National Speech and Debate Association National Tournament June 17-24 in Birmingham, Alabama. Coleman and Zell will be representing Altamont and the State of Alabama in Public Forum Debate. Approximately 7,000 people from across the United States and several parts of the world will be in Birmingham for the event, which is being held in the city for the first time since the 1970s.

Anna Kate Lembke and Chandni Patel qualified as the first alternate Public Forum team for Nationals with a 5-2 record. Zoë Zahariadis and Helen Tynes were finalists in Program Oral Interpretation and are also alternates for Nationals.

The Speech and Debate Team also had a great weekend, February 25-26, at the Vestavia Hills Tournament. Anna Kate Lembke won 1st place speaker in Varsity Public Forum (VPF). Mary Frances Lembke won 8th place speaker in VPF. Together, Lembke/Lembke advanced to the semifinal round with a 6-0 record. Maya Guru and Mae Baird advanced to quarterfinals in Novice Public Forum (NPF), as did Jane Grey Battle and JoJo Kelley. Jane Grey won 5th place speaker in NPF. Kate Ennis placed 4th overall in Program Oral Interpretation.
