On Friday, March 3, 2017, the Alabama Federation of French Clubs gathered at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa to celebrate the French Convention with the theme of "Les nouvelles révolutions françaises: Tout nouveau, tout beau!" In their performances and presentations at convention, students explored the currents of change that have swept and continue to sweep French culture. Altamont students performed exceptionally well. Results are as follows:

Scholarship Competition:
George Alcantara Martinez
won a $500 prize on the basis of an extemporaneous essay, written in French without a dictionary, followed by an interview in French with the judges.

Scholars Bowl Team Competition:
Our team of Zoe Zahariadis (captain), Afra Ashraf, Matthew Hamrick, and Vivek Sasse won Supérieur (First Place).

Individual Oral Competitions:
Level I Wei Shiow Fong won a Supérieur and Best Theatrical Production award.
Level II Eleanor Roth won a Supérieur and Best Theatrical Production award.
Level III Caroline Lee won a Supérieur and Best Theme-Related award.
Level IV Schuler Goepfert won a Supérieur and Originality award.

Group Skits:
Level I/II "Francogalactic Revolution" won a Supérieur and Best Theatrical Production award.
Level III/IV "Alice In Revolutionland" won a Supérieur, Best Theme-Related, and Most Humorous award.

Choral Competitions:
Solo Cricket Davis won a Supérieur award.
Group Altamont won a Très Bien award.

Extemporaneous Reading:
Level I Jeffrey Youngson won a Grand Prix* and Annagrace Parmer won a Supérieur award.
Level II Lily Davis won a Bien award.
Level IV Miles Underwood won a Supérieur award, and Joey Brown won a Très Bien award.

Extemporaneous Speaking in French:
Level I Robert Hanna won a Très Bien award.
Level II Lauren Perry won a Supérieur award.
Level III Partners Caroline Lee & Maya Leonard won a Très Bien award.
Level IV Partners Schuler Goepfert & Joey Brown won a Supérieur award.

Written Tests:
Level I Jojo Kelly won a Bien award.
Level II Simms Berdy won a Bien award, Lauren Perry won a Très Bien award, and David O'Brien won a Bien award.
Level IV Matthew Hamrick and Vivek Sasse each won a Grand Prix* award.

Dictée (Dictation) Competition:
Level I Nyasia Surani won a Très Bien award.
Level II David O'Brien won a Très Bien award.
Level III Caroline Lee won a Bien award, and Sofia Gaitan-Wolfe won a Très Bien award.

Spelling Bee:
Level II Lauren Perry won a Très Bien award, and Simms Berdy won a Bien award.

(*The Grand Prix award is given when a performance scores so high that it would knock out a whole level of scoring.)
