Altamont Student Wins Prestigious Service Award
Julie Beckwith

On November 15, 2018, Altamont sophomore Merritt Edwards was presented with the 2018 Bill Moran Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy award. This award honors a student who has made a significant impact through service in the Birmingham community. Merritt is the first Altamont student to win this competitive award. Along with other service leaders in the Birmingham community, Merritt was honored during a National Philanthropy Day event sponsored by the Association for Fundraising Professionals Alabama.

Merritt gave more than 100 hours of her free time this past year to serve others through her work with AnyTown Alabama, and other YWCA programs. In addition to her work with YWCA, she has participated in YouthServe and spent two of her Spring Breaks traveling with Students Today, Leaders Forever on service projects in the southeast. She is active in her EYC youth group, runs on the Altamont cross country and track teams, and has participated in a variety of theatre programs.

Merritt has taken advantage of all opportunities for leadership at Altamont through middle school LEAD and our upper school Miree Leadership Program. Her Miree project at Altamont is entitled "Celebrating Cultures," whereby she hopes to strengthen community using wall-sized photography displays around downtown Birmingham.

Congratulations Merritt! Altamont is very proud of you.
