Altamont Basketball Teams Wrap up Successful Seasons
Laine Williams

While several of the basketball seasons were shortened this year due to COVID-19, all of the students had a great attitude and enjoyed playing their sport.

Altamont's girls varsity basketball capped a successful season with a Sweet Sixteen appearance in the AHSAA Class 2A State tournament on Feb. 19, 2021, where they fell just short to Spring Garden. The team was anchored by the senior leadership of Zoya Bashir, Kalia Todd, Samantha Torch, Lauren Perry and Tiana Shelton. Coach Arner said, "The team demonstrated how talented they were by having six different girls score in double digits throughout the season." Tiana Shelton also scored her 1,000th point as an Altamont Knight on Feb. 9.

Altamont's boys varsity basketball also competed in the Area 10 2A tournament, advancing to the first round of the AHSAA Class 2A State tournament, where they lost to Westminster. This year was a rebuilding year after graduating five seniors from last season. According to Coach Mitchell, "The biggest takeaway from this season was not so much about sports, but it was about the life lessons each player gained from dealing with adversity. I'm so proud of these young men for the way that they adapted and continued to grind and fight with passion each day. This basketball season was certainly one of those things in life that will be a tool to help prepare this group of boys to be better men."

The boys junior varsity team and boys 7th-8th grade teams enjoyed their season as well. According to Coach Ford, "The coaches and players both had to find different ways to maximize time and preparation due to COVID-19. Everyone learned more about life than the game of basketball and we also gained knowledge about ourselves when we reached the adversity wall."

The girls 7th-8th grade basketball team had a successful season and finished 6-1. The team scored over 30 points in three of their games. Tanner Battle scored 95 points in just six games, averaging 15.8 points a game. The entire team practiced hard and made steady improvement throughout the season.

Congratulations and Go Knights!
