Student Government Association

Student opinion and participation is a valuable and integral part of any good academic institution. The Student Government Association includes the officers, the grade representatives, and presidents of the National Honor Society, Junior Honor Society, Senior Class, and a faculty advisor. The Basil M. Parks National Honor Society

The purpose of this chapter of the National Honor Society is to promote and encourage in its members an enthusiasm for superior scholarship, exemplary qualities of character, trustworthy leadership, and a willingness to serve their school, community, and nation. Members are chosen by a faculty council, based on outstanding scholarship, character, leadership, and service. The constitution may be found at this link, NHS Constitution.

National Junior Honor Society

The Elizabeth Brooke Chapter of the National Junior Society was started in 1977. Ninth and tenth grade students with a GPA of 90.00 or higher and have attended Altamont for a full academic year are eligible. Service to school and community, character and leadership are also important qualities in Honor Society members. The induction ceremony is in October each year. Mu Alpha Theta

Mu Alpha Theta is a national high school mathematics honor society. The requirements for membership at Altamont include a high honors grade in two consecutive or concurrent courses of high school mathematics and successful completion of Algebra I and geometry.

International Thespian Society, Troupe 251

The International Thespian Society has as its aim the advancement of excellence in educational theatre and the continuing enrichment of theatre arts and their appreciation around the world.

Alabama Students for Constitutional Reform

Upper and Lower School

The purpose of this club is to study the art of film making by watching and participating in the production of various films.

Altamont Moving Picture Association

Upper School Only

The purpose of this club is to study the art of film making by watching and participating in the production of various films.

Altamont Musicians Society

Open to Everyone

The Altamont Musicians' Society is a student-run record label begun in 2005. The club has become an integral part of student organized concerts and musical activities. They maintain a website at www.amsociety.com. The clubs goals are to:

  • Release and promote the work of recording and performing musicians.
  • Organize several student concerts throughout the year.
  • Foster musicianship through activities that bring musicians together.
  • Educate students in various aspects of music and the music scene of Birmingham.
  • Attend local concerts as a group.
  • Involve Fine Arts students in music production.
  • Make Birmingham more aware of the creative capacity of Altamont.

Altamont Science Club

Open To Everyone

The purpose of the Altamont Science Club is to provide extra-curricular activities to science students. The club will do different labs than are done in a normal lab class and possibly create a Science Olympiad Team.

The Altamont Service Organization

Upper School only

The mission of this club is to serve the school and community. To develop caring individuals who understand the intrinsic value of helping others. There are four project themes: Homelessness, Education, Cultural Awareness, and Bettering Birmingham.

Art Club

Upper School Only

The Art Club raises money to fund projects for the Altamont community and the community at large. Money will be raised for animal rescue groups. The club will also provide information on pet ownership.

Brevis Carta

Lower School only

The Brevis Carta is Altamont’s lower school newspaper. The purpose of the Brevis Carta is to teach students the basics of journalism and to allow them to have a voice in their school community. The Brevis Carta staff aims to produce four issues during the school year.

Cooking Club

5th and 6th Graders and 7th and 8th Graders

The Club will be scheduled for Activities period, but there will be some sessions after school to prepare and cook items that take a little longer. Featured this year will be quick and healthy breakfasts and snacks, fruit muffins and breads, and Holiday treats. We’ll have at least one field trip to watch professional cooks working!

Cro-Knitterie Club

Lower School only

Students learn to knit and crochet in a fun atmosphere. The end result is a lot of fun and great gifts for family and friends. No experience is necessary. The club will have a service project.

Environmental Club

Upper School

The purpose of this club is to educate students about the environment and to help take care of it.

The Forum for Cultural Diversity

Students in Grades 8-12

The Forum for Cultural Diversity is a group concerned about justice, tolerance, and rights for all people. The year begins with a fundraiser called “Walk-as-One,” the proceeds of which allow students to attend “Anytown, Alabama”, a week-long camp. The club also sponsors “Mix-It-Up Day in October”, an effort to get to know Altamont students. In January, the group goes to the “Make a Change” conference. They have also sponsored cultural heritage days, complete with ethnic foods or costumes.

French Club

Upper and Lower School

This club seeks to broaden Altamont’s understating and appreciation of French culture. Activities throughout the year include things like Mardi-Gras, Flower Day, French Convention, Eric Vincent Concert, and Pastry Day.

Friends of the World (FOW)

Lower School Only

Friends of the World is the lower school service club. The club sells locker organizers at registration and uses the proceeds to buy a much needed items for the homeless daycare center at the YWCA. This month FOW has already bought underwear for the children, and will buy three new baby swings because the motors on the ones we bought a few years ago are worn out. FOW ask members and anyone else to contribute batteries for the swings. The club’s activity is to visit the YWCA approximately once a month and play with the children.

Futsal Club

Upper School

The purpose of this club is to give students a chance to learn about and play Futsal, a form of indoor soccer that uses a smaller ball which doesn’t bounce like a normal soccer ball.

Girls Leading and Motivating (GLAM)

Upper School Only

Girls Leading and Motivating (GLAM) is a club which aims to raise awareness about many issues which effect not only girls within the Altamont community but also women as a whole in society. Some major topics which will be addressed include eating disorders, domestic violence, and breast cancer. GLAM is an excellent leadership opportunity for girls at Altamont which will allow them to address present issues, many of which they may especially relate to.

Investment Club

The purpose of this club is to educate students about the environment and to help take care of it.

Latin Club

Open only to Latin Students.

Model United Nations

Open to Grades 8-12

The purpose of this club is to educate students about the functions of the UN. This club will hold mock UN meetings to help give students an idea of how things work in the UN.

Outdoor Adventure Club

The purpose of this club is to teach students good investment skills that are bound to come in handy in the future.

Photography Club

The purpose of this club is to teach students good investment skills that are bound to come in handy in the future.

Spanish Club

Upper and Lower School

This club seeks to broaden Altamont’s understating and appreciation of Hispanic culture. Activities throughout the year include things like Chupa-Chup day, Spanish holiday activities, Spanish Club dinners, and a general wearing of Sra. Leonard’s giant sombrero.

Table Tennis Club

Upper School Only

This club celebrates the great game we know as table tennis (not ping-pong).

Travel Club

Upper School Only

This club is self-explanatory, it travels. Spring Break in Mexico, Christmas Break in California and possible trips to Charleston, SC; Chattanooga, TN; New Orleans, LA.
