The C. Kyser Miree Ethical Leadership Program
The upper school Miree Program is an elective, multi-faceted leadership program requiring hands-on, innovative responses to local, global, and ethical issues. A four-pillar approach combining academics, community service, cultural studies, and project-based initiatives focuses on authentic leadership experiences. Participants who successfully complete The Miree Program's requirements receive a distinction designation on their graduation diplomas, as well as a myriad of skills that will help them be ethical and compassionate leaders in higher education and beyond. The Middle School LEAD Program
The Middle School LEAD Program begins with an off-campus leadership retreat that reinforces the qualities of leadership and the importance of teamwork. Participants then apply these concepts to the rest of the Middle School experience by creating and organizing student events, class projects, and elective activities. Through a partnership with the upper school Student Government Association, LEAD members serve as ambassadors for new students and help welcome them into the Altamont community.
Student Government Association
Student opinion and participation are valuable and integral parts of any good academic institution. The Student Government Association includes the Officers of the School, grade representatives, presidents of the National Honor Society, Junior Honor Society, Senior Class, and faculty advisors.
The Basil M. Parks National Honor Society
The purpose of Altamont's chapter of the National Honor Society is to promote and encourage in it members an enthusiasm for superior scholarship, exemplary qualities of character, trustworthy leadership, and a willingness to serve their School, community, and nation. Members are chosen by a faculty council based on outstanding scholarship, character, leadership, and service.
The Elizabeth Brooke National Junior Honor Society
The Elizabeth Brooke Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society was begun in 1977. Ninth and tenth grade students with a GPA of 90.00 or higher and have attended Altamont for a full academic year are eligible. Service to School and community, character, and leadership are also important qualities in Honor Society members.
Mu Alpha Theta
Mu Alpha Theta is a national high school mathematics society. The requirements for membership at Altamont include a high honors grade in two consecutive or concurrent courses of high school mathematics and successful completion of Algebra I and Geometry.
International Thespian Society, Troupe 251
The International Thespian Society has as its aim the advancement of excellence in educational theatre and the continuing enrichment of theatre arts and their appreciation around the world.
Clubs
Altamont Musicians Society (AMS)
Open to all grades
The Altamont Musicians Society is a student-run record label begun in 2005. The club has become an integral part of student-organized concerts and musical activities. The goals of AMS are to:
- Release and promote the work of recording and performing musicians
- Organize several student concerts throughout the school year
- Foster musicianship through activities that bring musicians together
- Educate students in various aspects of music and the music scene in Birmingham
- Attend local concerts as a group
- Involve Fine Arts students in musical productions
- Make Birmingham more aware of the creative capacity of Altamont
Altamont Science Club
Open to all grades
The purpose of the Altamont Science Club is to provide extracurricular activities to science students.
Altamont Service Club
Upper School
The mission of the Altamont Service Club is to serve the School and the greater Birmingham community and to develop caring individuals who understand the intrinsic value of helping others. The four project themes of the Service Club are Homelessness, Education, Cultural Awareness, and Bettering Birmingham.
Art Club
Upper School
The Art Club raises money to fund projects for the Altamont community as well as the community at large.
French Club
Open to all grades
The French Club seeks to broaden Altamont's understanding and appreciation of French culture. Activities throughout the year include things like Mardi-Gras, Poisson d'Avril, French Convention, and Eric Vincent concert.
Friends of the World
Middle School
Friends of the World is a Middle School service club. The club sells locker organizers at registration and uses the proceeds to buy much-needed items for the homeless daycare center at the YWCA.
Girls Leading and Motivating (GLAM)
Upper School
Girls Leading and Motivating is a club which aims to raise awareness about many issues which affect not only girls within the Altamont community but also women as a whole in society. Some major topics that will be addressed include eating disorders, domestic violence, and breast cancer.
IFC
Middle School
Students in IFC learn to knit and crochet in a fun atmosphere. No experience is necessary.
Knightly Chefs
Middle School
Students in Knightly Chefs enjoy a wide variety of food and cooking related activities, including an annual French Market soup sale.
Latin Club
Open to all grades
The Latin Club seeks to broaden Altamont's understanding and appreciation of ancient Rome and Greek civilizations and cultures.
Model United Nations
Open to grades 8-12
The purpose of the Model UN club is to educate students about the functions of the United Nations. Through mock UN meetings, students will learn about the inner workings of this vital organization.
Spanish Club
Open to all grades
This club seeks to broaden Altamont's understanding and appreciation of Hispanic culture. Activities throughout the year include Chupa-Chup Day, Spanish Holiday activities, and Spanish Club dinners.
Table Tennis Club

This club celebrates the great game known as table tennis (not ping-pong).
