About the APA

Introduction

Parent participation has been one of the cornerstones of success for The Altamont School over the years. The Altamont Parents Association provides a structure and network for parental involvement, greatly enhancing the school’s overall sense of community. With your help we can achieve great things.

APA Organization

The leadership of the APA is its Governing Board, which is comprised of the Executive Council and two elected representatives from each of the eight grades (5th through 12th). The APA Executive Council includes the APA officers (president, president-elect, secretary and treasurer), the standing volunteer committee chairs and the Upper School and Lower School representatives, selected by the class representatives of each school from within their ranks.

The Headmaster and a designated Altamont School staff liaison serve as non-voting members of the Executive Council and the Governing Board. The Executive Council and Governing Board meet at least quarterly.

APA Committees

As with many volunteer organizations, the majority of APA work is done in committees. There are eight standing committees. Two of these, Finance and Nominations, are administrative in nature. The remaining six are intended to provide and coordinate volunteer opportunities within the school. These committees are where you need to volunteer your time and talents!

The Finance Committee develops the annual budget and monitors income and expenditures for the APA. This committee reviews requests from school entities for special project funding and forwards the requests, and its recommendation for funding, to the Governing Board.

Nominating:
The Nominating Committee identifies candidates to serve as APA officers for the upcoming year by encouraging leadership nominations from as broad a base as possible, and oversees the voting process. This committee also oversees the nomination and voting process for class representatives. Any nominee must agree to serve for the nomination to become effective. Generally, nominations will be accepted December through March, depending upon the position.

This committee is tasked in helping relieve the work load on the faculty associated with FPW.

Merchandise:
Volunteers for this committee are responsible for selecting and ordering logo merchandise to sell, establishing prices, maintaining inventory and scheduling and operating merchandise sales. Funds raised through these efforts are used to fund APA programs and support school activities.

Concessions:
The Concessions Committee organizes and operates the various concession stands throughout the school year. Basketball games, soccer games, special school events are examples of when the APA sells concessions which provide a large portion of its operating funds.
