Strategic Plan

Altamont has been working on a strategic plan to guide our plans for improvement over the coming years. Over the past several months, the Steering Committee for Strategic Planning has been assimilating the results from the public phase of our school-wide planning-interviews, focus groups, retreats, and surveys-and the draft report from our consultant, Bill Weary. The initial result from this work is posted on this website. Let us explain what the draft represents.

What you have is the foundation of what will eventually be a more elaborately detailed plan; what is posted here is the philosophy, the foundation of the actions that will follow. The Steering Committee felt that Altamont needed to affirm who we are and what we stand for before going to the next level of tactics. When you read the draft, follow the path from Mission to Values to Visions to Strategies. The Mission you will recognize, for it has not changed; we did get some feedback that we should consider looking at it to make sure it has the right order of priorities, so we will likely ask several faculty to join others in that review in the fall. The Values derive from Altamont's traditions; they would replace the "Statements of Belief" that are in the handbook. We feel that grounding the values in Truth, Knowledge, Honor and capturing the essential ideas of the statements in a clearer context and sequence allows us to be positive and assertive about who we are. The Visions are the link between our present and our future; they are aspirational but achievable. The Strategies point to the areas that need our attention to achieve the visions. When we looked at the results of the three retreats, we found consensus; Bill Weary also identified these areas as the ones we need to devote the next few years to. The next step, which we will work on this summer and complete in the fall, will be the Tactics-the specific action steps with timeline and budget; they will occupy us for the next few years.

We are releasing the draft to let everyone know the direction we are going and to find out if we are on track. We are also posting the survey results on the web site; you will need your log in to read them. After you read the draft, if you feel that you have a comment or a question, use the email link. We would like to stay at a conceptual level at this point. We are interested in learning if we have included everything and accurately reflected community feeling.

Thank you for taking the time to read and understand this draft. We hope that you will be as excited about Altamont's future as we are.
